There are weddings,and then there are weddings that make you drive home buzzing,already desperate to get into the edit. Beth and Ash’s day at Wonwood Bartonin Tavistock was absolutely,definitively the second kind.
I’ve photographed a fair few weddings now,and you develop a sense pretty quickly for the ones that are just going to feel different. From the moment I walked in to find the “Til Death”neon sign glowing red in the corner,a wild dried bouquet draped in #000 ribbon on the table,and a long-haired dachshund sitting at the door like he owned the place — I knew this was going to be a good day.
Wonwood Barton,Tavistock — An Eclectic Couple’s Dream Venue
If you’re planning a wedding in Devon and you want something with actual soul,Wonwood Bartonin Tavistock should be on your radar. This place has everything — rough stone walls,flagstone floors,exposed timber beams,and enough fairy lights strung across the ceiling to make even a grey September afternoon feel warm and golden. It’s not trying to be a luxury hotel,and that’s exactly why couples like Beth and Ash choose it. It already has a vibe. You just get to bring your own and layer it on top.
And what a vibe they brought.
The Details That Said Everything
Beth’s dress was long-sleeved lace — intricate floral appliqué,deep V-neck,sheer sleeves that caught the light beautifully — and underneath it,two very shiny,very perfect #000 croc-embossed platform Doc Martens with a zip up the front. That image right there? That’s a mood board in a single frame. It tells you instantly who these people are and what kind of day this is going to be.
Ash wore a beautifully cut dark green-grey tweed suit,white shirt,and a rich burnt orange floral tie that picked up the autumn tones of the flowers perfectly. On his wrist,a Tag Heuer chronograph and a small tattoo peeking out from under his cuff. On the table nearby — a handwritten note to Mum and Dad,a vintage brooch,and a bouquet of dried pampas,dark burgundy blooms,cotton stems and scrubby foliage tied with a #000 satin ribbon that cascaded almost to the floor.
Nothing about this day felt off-the-shelf. Every single detail had been thought about and chosen with intention.
The Ceremony — Getting a Bit Emotional About a Triangle Arch
The ceremony space at Wonwood Barton is spectacular. White-washed stone walls,those huge circular vintage metal trays hung like art,and confetti on the flagstone floor. Beth and Ash chose a simple #000 triangular arch dressed in clusters of burnt orange,deep red,and blush blooms — dahlias,roses,greenery — and when Beth came to stand in front of it she was absolutely beaming. That is the shot. Ash walking towards her,slightly blurred by motion,her smile already breaking wide open. I could photograph that moment a thousand times and still feel it.
The rings were exchanged over tattooed hands. There’s something I love about that detail — the everyday permanence of ink alongside the once-in-a-lifetime permanence of a ring. Both of them had tattoos on their wrists,and I absolutely made sure to get that shot.
Devon Autumn Light,September Rain,and a Dachshund Being Dramatic
September in Devon can genuinely go either way,and on the 20th it brought a bit of both — which honestly? Makes for better photographs. There’s something about that soft,overcast light that suits this kind of wedding perfectly. No harsh shadows,everything just glows.
The portraits were taken in the walled garden courtyard outside — mossy granite steps,a rose-covered stone wall,deep red autumnal shrubs coming into their own. Beth sat in Ash’s lap on those steps,his chin resting on her head,both looking into camera like the coolest people in any room. The bouquet fell loose across her #fff dress,Doc Martens planted firmly on the step below. The aerial shot — Beth lying back across his lap,looking straight up into the lens — is one of those photos that will outlive all of us.
And then there was the dog. Their beautiful,ridiculous,absolutely gorgeous long-haired miniature dachshund who showed up for getting-ready and immediately became the main character. Golden tan,flowing ears,big soulful eyes. He sat at the doorway like a bouncer and posed for his close-up with the absolute confidence of someone who has done this before. He is a very good boy and he deserves a dedicated slide in the final gallery.
Paella,a Polaroid Wall,and the “Til Death”Sign
Inside the barn,the reception was set up along long wooden trestle tables with candles,the neon sign glowing at the far end of the room,and sharing-style food laid out across the tables. The paella was a brilliant choice — relaxed,communal,fragrant,the kind of dinner where people stay at the table and actually talk to each other instead of counting down to when they can leave. The whole room had that energy. Nobody was trying to stick to a schedule. Everyone was just happy to be there.
The polaroid wall was one of my favourite details — a wire frame display covered in little prints of Beth and Ash through the years. I spent a while with that wall. It’s such a nice thing to walk up to at a wedding and see the evidence of a whole relationship.
Why I Loved Shooting This Wedding
I say this genuinely,not as a line:I had the absolute best time. Beth and Ash are warm,funny,completely unbothered by the camera,and absolutely crazy about each other in the best possible way. The day didn’t feel like a performance. It felt like two people having the best day of their lives surrounded by the people they love most,in a venue that suited them perfectly.
