Keeping Traditions Alive: A Christmas Photoshoot Full of Chaos, Fun, and Matching Pyjamas

Seven years of photographing Zaiden—seven years of laughter, milestones, and moments frozen in time. Long before his little brother Zeian joined the picture, we were already creating a tradition: capturing the magic of Christmas and birthdays year after year. Even now, with my life having moved 400 miles away from Essex to the peaceful beauty of Cornwall, this tradition is one I just had to keep. And so, with my camera packed and Christmas spirit in tow, I made the long journey back for another festive adventure.

This year, however, we decided to mix things up a bit. Let’s be honest—asking little ones to sit still and simply smile for the camera isn’t exactly their idea of fun. So, the plan was simple: keep the boys engaged, keep it interactive, and let the magic unfold naturally. Cue the chaos—and the matching pyjamas. Yes, mum and dad joined in, too, making this photoshoot feel more like a family Christmas morning than anything staged. And it worked beautifully.

We started with decorating the Christmas tree. There’s something so special about those candid moments: the tiny hands carefully (and sometimes not so carefully) placing ornaments, the wide-eyed wonder when the lights flicker on, and the giggles as they reached for branches just a little too high. While the boys busied themselves creating their vision of the perfect tree, I captured every precious moment—the mischief, the teamwork, the joy. Perfectly imperfect.

But the fun didn’t stop there. After the tree had been declared complete (with a few ornaments just about surviving), it was time for the next obsession of the season: decorating Grinch cookies. Who knew the Grinch could be so delicious? Watching Zaiden and Zeian dive headfirst into frosting and sprinkles, their faces lit up with concentration and glee, was pure gold. Sticky fingers, cheeky smiles, and cookies that looked—let’s say—creative made for some of my favourite photos of the day.

Yes, it was chaos—but the very best kind. Capturing real, raw family moments like these reminds me why I do what I do. It’s not about perfectly posed shots; it’s about the connections, the traditions, and the memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Was the 400-mile drive worth it? Absolutely. Traditions matter, and being part of this family’s Christmas story year after year is such an honour. The matching pyjamas, the slightly wonky tree, and the sticky green frosting were all part of what made this photoshoot so unforgettable. Here’s to another year of memories, mischief, and magic—and many more to come.

Thank you, Zaiden, Zeian, and family, for keeping me in your Christmas traditions. Until next year!
